About Voices

Voices 7, our annual benefit event, was held at ESPACE, 635 West 42nd Street, on Thursday, May 5th, 2011.  The event highlighted the work of The Brotherhood/Sister Sol, celebrated our members and honored the 106th Mayor of the City of New York, David N. Dinkins; the actress and philanthropist Rosario Dawson; and the public intellectual and professor Dr. Cornel West. It was a truly powerful night with over 400 people in attendance. We were all moved by the words of our honorees and the profound poetry and voices of our members.

Voices 7 featured a cocktail reception, silent auction, and performances by our members including Lyrical Circle—an award winning collective of poets. The evening also provided a unique opportunity for our dynamic supporters to celebrate BHSS’s work of helping Black and Latino youth develop into critical thinkers and community leaders. We are deeply appreciate of the support of our donors, guests, and friends- each of you helped make Voices 7 our most successful Voices event to date!

Voices is our signature annual celebration of our youth and our life changing programming. The evening provides a platform for our members to share their unique commentary through spoken word performances. Voices is also the time when we celebrate and highlight the accomplishments of our honorees – individuals who embody the ideals of The Brotherhood/Sister Sol: Positivity, Community, Knowledge and Future.
